New cheeses, March events, and the lineup

It's Winnimere season, y'all! What's Winnimere, you say? So glad you asked! Jasper Hill Farm makes this farmstead cheese using only the rich winter milk of their herd of Ayrshire cows, wraps the wheels in spruce bark from the farm, then washes them in a craft brew from nearby Hill Farmstead Brewery. I cut into the first wheels today and am pretty blown away. They are incredibly luscious, a bit stinky, and most distinctively, salty and bacon-y!

Brand spankin' new to The Bloomy Rind this week are two cheeses from Tumalo Farms in Bend, Oregon. My brother, who lives in Bend, first told me about them last year. Tumalo Farms makes an assortment of goat and goat/cow cheeses. I've selected a couple that I'm particularly fond of: Classico, a aged gouda-style cheese, and Pondhopper, a cheese made with a local-to-them microbrew beer to give the cheese a subtle bit o' hoppiness.

Pick up these and all your faves Saturday at the Nashville Farmers' Market (10am - 2pm inside the Market House).

And mark your calendars for a couple evening events:

Thursday, March 3rd, 5-8pm:
Cheese sampling at Provence during the Hillsboro Village Art Walk

Friday, March 18th, 6-8pm:
March Night Market (Nashville Farmer's Market)

Greetings cheese lovers,

Couple new goodies this week... I had the pleasure of visiting Bonnie Blue Farm yesterday and picked up a small amount of Two Tomme, a lovely aged cheese made with both goat and cow's milk from the Tanner's cow, Eileen. I also have Wabash Cannonball, an ash-dusted, surface ripened goat milk boulet from Capriole, the makers of the much loved O'Banon. Both are in very limited quantities - and both are sooo tasty!

And last week brought the lastest release from Sequatchie Cove Creamery, super creamy washed rind Coppinger. As a special treat, Padgett from SCC will be at the Night Market sampling Coppinger!

New and returning cheeses + Feb Night Market

Greetings cheese lovers and snow bunnies,

I hope everyone is keeping warm during our, like, seventeenth snow of the season!

So Valentine's Day is almost here, and I bet you're trying to figure out what to get your sweetie. I know this will come as a shock to you guys, but I'm gonna throw out the best idea ever...cheese and chocolate! Amazingly, I have both on hand.

And for my single peeps reading along, why not gather a group of pals and have a cheese party? Everyone brings a favorite cheese and beverage, then you taste and share to heart's content!

This Saturday at the market, we have several new and returning cheeses to make your tastebuds happy.
  • Tennessee's Sequatchie Cove Creamery has released a second cheese called Coppinger. A washed rind beaut aged a little over three months, Coppinger has an insanely creamy semi-soft texture with nice acidity.
  • Two of Blackberry Farm's sheep's milk cheese are back this week: Pecorino-inspired Singing Brook and Blackberry Farm Blue.
  • And one of my personal faves, Ascutney Mountain, is back! I usually describe it as the love child of an aged gouda and an aged cheddar. Happy, happy, happy.

Next Friday brings this month's Night Market. If you haven't made it to one of these festive evenings, you're missing out, my friends. It's such a blast! Wine, music, and your favorite vendors, all in one place. Friday, February 18th, 6-8pm. And, as an added bonus, the 'Rind will have a special guest at the stand: Padgett Arnold of Sequatchie Cove Creamery! Come by and say hello - and, of course, buy some cheese. :)

Keep in mind, too, if you need cheese and can't get to the market, Provence Breads in the Village now has a great selection of Bloomy Rind cheeses. Currently in their case: Carolina Moon, brand new Coppinger, O'Banon, Black Butte Reserve, Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Cumberland, and Hickory Grove. More to come!

As always, keep the 'Rind in mind if you need a killer cheese plate for your next event.

Cheers,
Kathleen
